Threave Garden & Nature Reserve

Threave Garden is the National Trust for Scotland's teaching garden, home since 1960 to its School of Heritage Gardening, whose students have shaped 26 hectares of garden rooms around Threave House, an 1871 Baronial mansion shown as it was in the 1930s. There is a walled garden with glasshouses, a rose garden, a rockery, heather and woodland gardens and a famous spring show of some 200 kinds of daffodil, with views over the Galloway Hills, and the wider estate is a nature reserve of wetlands along the Dee with an osprey platform, hides, and Scotland's only bat reserve, home to eight species. Reviewers praise the blue poppies, the accessible paths and the cafe. Tips from visitors: the house is run by volunteers on a few days a week, so check it is open; the garden is a mile west of Castle Douglas off the A75; umbrellas are lent at the visitor centre; and Threave Castle on its island is a separate Historic Environment Scotland site.
