The Roman Wall of St Albans survives along the edge of Verulamium Park, tracing part of the defences built around the Roman city between AD 265 and 270. Flint rubble and horizontal brick bands form substantial stretches of masonry, while the foundations of bastions and the London Gate show where Watling Street entered the town. Looking at these remains in their parkland setting helps explain the size of a settlement that once ranked among Roman Britain's most important towns. Reviewers recommend including the gate and reading the interpretation boards, rather than stopping at the first piece of wall. The park's paths connect the remains with Verulamium Museum, whose separate displays give more context for the city. Paid parking is available near the museum, about ten minutes away on foot. Dogs on leads are welcome, and the park has toilets, a cafe and a children's play area.
