Scarborough Castle stands on the headland between the town's two bays, with a ruined Great Tower and a broad grassy interior that makes its defensive position immediately clear. Viewing platforms in the Inner Bailey and tower look across the harbour, town and North Sea. Further across the headland are the remains of a Roman signal station and an Anglo-Saxon church, adding earlier chapters to the castle's story. The exhibition provides context for the ruins, while the meadow and a modern climate-themed sculpture invite a slower circuit of the grounds. Reviewers repeatedly single out the coastal views and enjoy discovering the different periods represented here. Leave time for the uphill approach and use sturdy footwear on grass, cobbles and gravel. General parking is off site; accessible spaces at the castle must be arranged in advance. Dogs on leads are welcome, with care needed on the exposed headland.

General visitors cannot park at the castle. The driving pin is Marine Drive council car park, an EH-recommended option; the onward approach is uphill. EH membership does not cover council parking.

Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Call ahead to reserve the limited accessible parking or a Tramper.

Marine Drive is operated by North Yorkshire Council. EH and NT membership do not cover its charges. Charges apply 09:00-18:00 from 1 March to 31 October; Blue Badge holders park free when displaying a valid badge.

There is an uphill walk to the castle. Castle parking is only for disabled visitors who book ahead on 01723 372451.
