Free for everyone; no staff, tickets or booking. The interior is opened with a key lent by a neighbouring house against a €50 deposit (details on the boundary gate).
Arrive on foot, by bike or by public transport.
OPW names no car park; reviewers park on the narrow road outside, where space is limited. No bus service is named.
Driving pin: the tower house itself, by the lane off Strand Road. OPW's directory pin is about 810 m north on a windmill stump and is wrong.
On one of the highest points of Termonfeckin village, where the ground falls sharply to the shore of the Irish Sea, stands a three-storey tower house with a parapet and look-out turret, in a village that grew around St Fechin's monastery of 665. Its date is uncertain: OPW suggests the Norman period, the reign of Henry VIII, or one of Henry VI's ten-pound castles of the 1430s. Damaged in the 1641 rebellion and repaired by Captain James Brabazon, it was home to mendicants by 1834. Inside are a barrel-vaulted ground floor, rooms with a fireplace and garderobes lit by small carved granite windows, and, its most interesting feature, a corbelled stone roof to the top storey that recalls the passage tomb at Newgrange. The gate is kept locked and the key is borrowed from a neighbouring house, which reviewers, children especially, count as half the fun; a narrow spiral stair leads to the battlements and views over the sea.
An unguided open-air national monument in OPW's care with no staff and no facilities. OPW warns that care and caution should be kept throughout a visit to its unguided sites.
OPW's notice: keys to the interior are available from a neighbouring house for a €50 deposit, with details on the tower house's boundary gate. Reviewers find the gate locked on arrival, and the keyholder is occasionally out.
A narrow spiral stone stair climbs to the roof; take care coming down. Not suitable for wheelchairs. No information on site and no toilets.
