The Georgian House

The Georgian House is No 7 Charlotte Square, part of Robert Adam's palace-fronted north side of the finest square in Edinburgh's New Town, built in 1796 and first owned by John Lamont, 18th chief of Clan Lamont. The National Trust for Scotland has restored it as it was around 1800, from the dining room and drawing room hung with Raeburn, Ramsay and Nasmyth down to the kitchen and the servants' quarters below stairs, with household objects from the everyday to the curious and a film on living in a grand design. Reviewers say every room feels lived in and single out the kitchen and the film. The house is closed for exterior and interior conservation work, so check the National Trust for Scotland's page before travelling. Tips from visitors: there is no level access and the rooms are spread over four floors of stone stairs, there is almost no parking in the square, and Waverley and Haymarket stations are a 15 to 20 minute walk.
