16 October to 16 March daily 9am to 4.30pm, last admission 3.45pm, last guided tour 2.30pm; 17 March to 15 October daily 9am to 5.30pm, last admission 4.45pm, last guided tour 3.45pm; closed 24 to 26 December. Allow one to one and a half hours. The ticket covers the site, the museum, the audio-visual show and a 45-minute general guided tour (times advised on arrival, no booking needed, or self-guide); timed tickets can be booked online, and all groups must pre-book. Cormac's Chapel is by separate guided tour only, with limited tickets sold on site at an extra charge that OPW does not publish, so ring ahead for tour times. The rock is extremely exposed and can close at short notice in bad weather; tour times change with weather and works.
The site is a hilltop reached up a hill from the car park, with uneven ground, old broken headstones, steps, low doorways and handrails to hold; no step-free route is described and it is very windy, so wear appropriate footwear and warm, waterproof layers. Reception is in the Hall of the Vicars Choral, which is entered upstairs with steps down to the museum; Cormac's Chapel interior is small and can feel claustrophobic. No toilets or cafe on site: public toilets are by the car park exit. Gift shop, self-guiding booklet for a small fee in season, card payments accepted, visitor guides in nine languages. OPW gives free entry to visitors with disabilities and their carers.
