Wheeldale Roman Road

Wheeldale Roman Road crosses open moorland near Goathland, a mile-long strip of stonework whose origins remain unsettled. Traditionally linked with Rome's road network, it has also been interpreted as a medieval route or an altered prehistoric boundary, so the familiar name is a starting point rather than a proven explanation. Also known as Wade's Causeway, it carries a local legend of a giant and his wife travelling between distant castles. The exposed stone core and drainage features provide plenty to examine, while the surrounding moor makes the monument's isolation part of the experience. Visitors enjoy tracing its line but advise allowing for rough ground and a stile at the approach. Roadside parking is limited, and there are no visitor facilities identified by English Heritage. Wear sturdy footwear, keep clear of grazing livestock and prepare for exposed weather before setting out from the road.
