Aldborough Roman Site preserves part of Isurium Brigantum, the Romanised capital of the Brigantes, beneath a Yorkshire village. The surviving town defences lie within a Victorian arboretum, where tall conifers frame fragments of masonry and two well-preserved mosaic floors are protected inside small buildings. A museum gathers finds from the town, helping connect the visible remains with the much larger settlement below the surrounding streets and gardens. Reviewers particularly value the volunteers' explanations and recommend allowing time for the mosaics rather than judging the site by its modest entrance. Opening dates and guided tours vary, so consult the current calendar before travelling. Roadside parking is very limited, with a larger alternative in Boroughbridge. Wheelchair access is restricted and there are steps around the grounds. Dogs on leads are allowed, subject to restrictions in some areas.
Limited wheelchair access and steps in the grounds; contact 01423 322768 before visiting. There is no lift. Wet grass, rabbit holes and fenced quarry edges require care.

Please note, during September we are hosting an exciting excavation at the site, led by the University of Cambridge. During the dig we are unable to offer guided tours. However, you can still come when the site is open and enjoy a self-led tour. Plus you can meet our volunteers and watch the archaeologists at work as they uncover new insights into Aldborough’s Roman past.
