Arthur's Stone

Arthur's Stone is a Neolithic burial chamber built from great slabs on the hills above Herefordshire's Golden Valley. Its name reflects a much later tradition linking the monument with King Arthur, including a story in which a defeated giant left marks on the stones. The surviving chamber is a small site, but its position among open fields gives it a broad landscape setting that reviewers often mention as a reason to linger. Visitors also remark on the narrow approach lanes and the care needed when driving them. The official recommended approach is a roughly 1.2-mile uphill footpath from Dorstone village, where visitors can use the village car park. There is only very limited space in the lay-by beside the monument. Bring what you need for the visit, as there are no nearby facilities, and do not climb on the stones.
