Pen y Fan, at 886m the highest mountain in southern Britain, stands flanked by Corn Du at 873m and Cribyn at 795m in the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog, one of the most recognisable skylines in the UK. More than 250,000 walkers a year climb to the summits for views across south and mid Wales to the Severn Estuary, while below Corn Du sits Llyn Cwm Llwch, the best preserved glacial lake in South Wales. For quieter ground the Trust suggests the semi-ancient woods of the upper Tarell Valley, or Henrhyd Falls, a 90-foot waterfall you can walk behind. Its trails include the 3.5-mile Henrhyd Falls and Nant Llech walk and a challenging 10-mile horseshoe ridge circular from Taf Fechan car park. Dogs are welcome on leads, with care needed around livestock. Reviewers find the stone-pitched path up Pen y Fan a manageable hike. Tips from visitors: the weather changes quickly and it is far colder and windier near the summit, so wear proper boots and go prepared. The main car park, Pont ar Daf on the A470, has toilets.
Path closure: From 21 October 2026 to early 2027 the path between Pont ar Daf car park and Storey Arms, running parallel to the A470, is closed due to forestry work in the adjacent plantation.
