Henrhyd Falls, Sgwd Henrhyd in Welsh, is the tallest waterfall in South Wales, where the Nant Llech drops 90 feet (27 metres) into the wooded Graig Llech Gorge in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. The stream falls over a faulted edge of hard sandstone known as the Farewell Rock, and the falls stood in for the entrance to the Batcave in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. From the National Trust car park outside Coelbren, a path of about a mile there and back drops through ancient woodland, with a steep flight of steps near the start and some slippery, uneven ground. Reviewers single out the chance to walk along the narrow, wet ledge behind the curtain of water, best left to the sure-footed, and warn that the climb back up is steep and often muddy. Several warn that the free car park fills on busy days, when a neighbouring field charges for overflow parking. Dogs are welcome on short leads.
Countryside open all day on NT's calendar.
The route to the falls is about 1.5 km (1 mile) there and back, with a steep flight of stairs near the start, steep sections and uneven surfaces that can be muddy and slippery; not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Viewing points along the trail allow a shorter walk.
Stay on the designated paths; the rocks around the falls can be slippery.
