About
Brough Castle occupies a ridge above Church Brough on the site of a Roman fort, commanding the route through the Stainmore Pass. Its substantial keep dates from around 1200 and reflects the importance of this often-contested border country. The Clifford family later added more comfortable living quarters, which were damaged by fire after a Christmas celebration in 1521. Lady Anne Clifford restored the castle in the 17th century, and traces of her work remain among the ruins. Information boards help visitors follow these different phases, while reviewers often mention the views and the independent ice-cream parlour beside the site. Park considerately in the village and approach on foot; English Heritage specifically asks visitors not to park at Brough Castle Farm.
