Bowes Castle preserves the imposing shell of a keep built for Henry II in the 12th century. It occupies the site of a Roman fort that guarded the approach to Stainmore Pass, giving this small village a much longer defensive history than the surviving medieval walls alone suggest. The roof has gone, but the thick stonework and tall openings still convey the strength of the royal building. Reviewers generally treat it as a short stop rather than a full day out, enjoying the contrast between the heavy masonry and the open countryside around it. Approach beside the village church and take time to look at the keep from outside as well as within. Parking is in the village, so leave residents' entrances clear. The rubble path and potentially muddy ground make sturdy footwear useful. Dogs are welcome on leads.
