Coughton Court has been home to the Throckmorton family since 1409, and since February 2026 the family have run it themselves once again under their hereditary lease, so it is no longer part of the National Trust member offer and members pay to see the house and gardens; check the family's own website for opening days and tours before travelling. The Trust still owns the property. The battlemented Tudor gatehouse of about 1530 fronts half-timbered wings holding a rich collection of Catholic recusant history, with a Tower Room exhibition on the family's part in the Gunpowder Plot. Outside are a walled garden, a riverside walk and two churches, one Anglican and one Catholic. Reviewers praise the knowledgeable volunteers, the guided house tours, the excellent coffee and the Throckmortons themselves at work in the cafe. Tips from regulars: parking is a short walk from the house, dogs can join you in the courtyard cafe, and the plant shop and second-hand bookshop are worth a look.
