Croxden Abbey

Croxden Abbey was home to a Cistercian community that numbered around 70 monks at its height. Although the site became a farm after its suppression in 1538, tall sections of the church still stand alongside the remains of the infirmary and abbot's lodging. The different buildings give a sense of the abbey's working layout, with information panels explaining its architecture and history. Reviewers often describe the ruins as more extensive than expected and appreciate being able to examine the stonework at their own pace. The approach uses country lanes, so allow time for the final stretch and watch for other road users. Parking is limited to a few spaces in the layby at the entrance; keep neighbouring access and grass verges clear. The grounds are grassy and uneven, with slopes and steps between some sections of the ruins.
