Hawksmoor is an ancient woodland on the steep sides of the Churnet valley between Cheadle and Oakamoor in Staffordshire. Green woodpeckers, spotted flycatchers and ravens live among the trees, and the wild flowers and archaeology of Gibridding Wood have drawn artists and photographers for many years. Trust heritage records note old mine shafts in Gibridding Wood and the site of a medieval iron forge, fed by spring water, charcoal and ironstone, later covered by cottages that disappeared after the East Wall Colliery closed and the Froghall to Uttoxeter canal shut in 1846; East Wall Farmhouse, built around 1850, now overlooks the valley. Reviewers describe peaceful walks with fine views and warn of plenty of steep, rooty ups and downs. The car park takes only about six cars and there are no toilets or other facilities, so come prepared. Dogs are allowed. The woods can also be reached on foot from Dimmingsdale and Oakamoor village.
