Dover's Hill is a natural amphitheatre on a spur of the Cotswold escarpment, a mile north-west of Chipping Campden, with far-reaching views across the Vale of Evesham. It was the site of the original English Olympic Games, Robert Dover's Cotswold Olimpicks, first held here in 1612, and the tradition continues as an annual event on the hill. The terraced woodland slopes below are said to be the remains of a Roman vineyard, and medieval ridge and furrow still patterns the field known as Kingcombe Plain. A level hard track runs through a gate from the car park to the viewpoint; beyond it the grass turns steeper and more uneven. Reviewers love the views and the sheep that share the hill, and also recommend dropping down into the woods at the foot of the slope. One tip from regulars: download the JustPark app before arriving, as the signal is poor. Livestock graze all year, so dogs must stay on a short lead.
NT's opening calendar lists the countryside open dawn to dusk.
Level access through a pedestrian gate on a hard track from the car park to the viewpoint; north of the viewpoint the grass is mildly undulating, and below the top it becomes steeper and uneven.
No toilets or catering are listed on the NT page.
The annual Cotswold Olimpicks take place on the hill; check the NT page for the date before travelling.
