Chastleton House

Chastleton House is a Jacobean country house built between 1607 and 1612 by a wealthy wool merchant, remarkable for remaining in the same family for nearly 400 years without major alteration. The house is filled with a mixture of rare and everyday objects accumulated over centuries, giving an authentic and unrestored atmosphere quite unlike grander stately homes. The garden features one of England's first croquet lawns — the rules of modern croquet were codified here in 1865 — and topiary dating from the 17th century.
