Dunstanburgh Castle

Dunstanburgh Castle is a dramatic 14th-century ruin standing on a remote basalt headland on the Northumberland coast, accessible only by foot. Built by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, in 1313 as both a fortress and a political statement against Edward II, the castle's massive gatehouse and curtain walls dominate the wild coastline. The castle is managed by English Heritage but the surrounding coastline and farmland are in National Trust care.
