Edlingham Castle

Edlingham Castle began as a manor house and was progressively strengthened during the 14th century as conflict along the Anglo-Scottish border made domestic security increasingly important. Its riverside ruins are smaller than Northumberland's great coastal fortresses, but the surviving walls and conspicuously leaning tower give a clear sense of a residence adapted for defence. Visitors often comment on the quiet setting and the feeling of having the place largely to themselves. Several recommend taking time to look at the nearby church and the old railway viaduct as part of the visit. The approach starts beside the church, where only a small amount of parking is available, then follows a short path towards the ruins. Waterproof footwear is a sensible choice because the ground can be wet and uneven. Dogs on leads are welcome.
