Egglestone Abbey stands above a bend in the River Tees near Barnard Castle, the remains of a small monastery of Premonstratensian white canons. Much of its 13th-century church survives alongside domestic buildings, allowing visitors to trace both worship and everyday life within the community. Look for the remains of the canons' drainage system among the living quarters, a practical detail that helps bring the ruins into focus. Reviewers tend to treat the abbey as a short, peaceful stop with a memorable riverside setting. English Heritage suggests a walk to Barnard Castle that partly follows the river and links the two historic sites. Dogs are welcome on leads at the abbey.
