About
Easby Abbey preserves extensive remains of a Premonstratensian monastery beside the River Swale, a short distance from Richmond. Founded in 1152 for the order's white-robed canons, it was suppressed in 1536 and soon stripped of much of its fabric. The surviving refectory, gatehouse and dormitory still convey the scale of the community, while the parish church within the precinct contains rare medieval wall paintings. The ruins later attracted artists including JMW Turner. Visitors praise the setting and information boards, and often arrive on foot from Richmond. English Heritage identifies a riverside walk between the abbey and Richmond Castle, offering a way to join the two visits. Dogs are welcome on leads at the abbey. Wear footwear suited to muddy, uneven ground and steps, and leave time to look inside the neighbouring church when it is open.

Volunteer tours may operate at weekends from March to November. Church opening is separate from access to the abbey ruins.
