Goodrich Castle rises above a strategic crossing of the River Wye, a medieval stronghold founded in the late 11th century and battered during the Civil War. Its ruined towers, courtyard and dry moat remain unusually rewarding to explore, with a dark dungeon below and a steep climb to wide countryside views from the keep. Look for Roaring Meg, the mortar associated with the siege of 1646, and the surviving shell in the visitor centre. Reviewers repeatedly praise the audio guide for making sense of the castle's rooms and violent history, while families can pick up a game at admissions. The tearoom and shop provide a useful break before or after exploring. Allow for the walk from the visitor centre to the castle, and wear shoes suitable for uneven, sometimes slippery steps. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout, but the surrounding private woods and fields are not open to visitors.

Open daily 10am-5pm until 24 October 2026, then 10am-4pm from 25 October to 1 November. From 2 November-20 December 2026, open Saturday, Sunday 10am-4pm. Check the official calendar for holidays, later dates and event exceptions.

Last entry normally 30 minutes before closing.

EH members receive free standard admission with their membership card. National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary admission; check special events separately.

The castle is not wheelchair accessible; the cafe and shop are accessible. Two accessible bays about 150m from the castle can be arranged at admissions. The keep has a narrow dark spiral staircase, with uneven steps and limited edge protection. No lift.

Parking: Large car park by the visitor centre and tearoom, about 400m from the castle. £4 for non-members; free for EH members displaying a valid car sticker. Accessible parking nearer the castle must be arranged at admissions.
