Graig Fawr is a 62-acre limestone hillside above Meliden, at the northern tip of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its cliffs, meadows and limestone grassland form a Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to nationally scarce plants such as spiked speedwell, dark-red helleborine and Nottingham catchfly, and to rare butterflies including the white-letter hairstreak and the silver-studded blue, a population the Trust believes came from the Great Orme. Paths climb from the car park to the summit trig point, with views over the Clwyd Valley to the Carneddau and Eryri mountains, the Great and Little Ormes and the Irish Sea. Livestock graze the hill to restore the grassland, so keep to the paths and use the kissing gates. Reviewers describe a short, rewarding climb that small children can manage, though parts are steep and can be muddy. The car park is small and fills quickly. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
Graig Fawr is open from dawn to dusk on the National Trust calendar.
There are no toilets or refreshments on site.
The hill is grazed to restore the limestone grassland; stay on the walking routes and use the kissing gates between fields. Some gates are locked to keep livestock in their areas.
By bus, the nearest stop is the Star Inn in Meliden; a pedestrian gate gives access at the foot of the hill.
