The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
Historic Scotland names no parking for Baluachraig. Visitors park at the small Dunchraigaig Cairn car park on the A816, which Historic Scotland names for the neighbouring cairn, and reviewers describe it as free; no official charge or free statement exists, so the status is recorded as unknown.
Driving pin: the Dunchraigaig Cairn car park, 264 m south-east of Historic Scotland's own pin on the rocks. From the cairn, a path runs north through trees, over a small stream and through a gate, then along the field edge to the stile into the fenced site. Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
At Baluachraig, in a field at the south end of Kilmartin Glen, flat outcrops of dark rock are covered with prehistoric carvings probably about 5,000 years old. Most are cups, hollows pecked into the stone without metal tools, some surrounded by one or more rings, and there are dozens of them across the fenced outcrops. Why they were made is unknown; Historic Scotland suggests they may have marked long-established routes to pastures or hunting grounds, from a time when ritual monuments rather than settlements were the fixed points in the landscape. Kilmartin Glen has one of the greatest concentrations of carved rock and Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments anywhere in Scotland, and Baluachraig is one of its many carved outcrops. There is no parking of its own: use the small Dunchraigaig Cairn car park on the A816 and walk five to ten minutes through trees, over a small stream and along a field edge to a stile, in strong footwear.
Historic Scotland: 'The Baluachraig Rock Art is free to visit and is open year-round.' No hours, closures or notices on 20 October 2026; not on Historic Scotland's closures page. Historic Scotland's directory lists it as 'Kilmartin Glen: Baluachraig Rock Art'.
The site is fenced and can only be reached over a stile through working farmland, so strong footwear is recommended and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code applies. The carvings are on low, flat outcrops inside the fence. No toilets or other facilities.
