Free for everyone; an open-air monument with no staff, tickets or booking. No membership card is needed.
The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
OPW names no car park or directions. Visitors report a small parking space at the site and a very short walk round a corner along a grassy path (about 80 m) to the tomb; it is not an official car park. The approach lanes are narrow with few passing places. No bus service is named.
Driving pin: where the path to the tomb leaves the lane, 78 m from OPW's own pin on the tomb. The driveway beside it is a private house entrance.
On the south-eastern slopes of Carricktriss Gorse hill, about seven kilometres north-east of Mullinavat, stands Ireland's tallest dolmen, known locally as Leac an Scáil, the Hero's Stone, five metres from its base to the top of the capstone. Portal tombs like this were built between 3800 and 3000 BC, and fewer than two hundred survive in Ireland. Here a massive granite capstone, five metres long and veined with quartz, rests on a lower roof stone and on two portal stones over three and a half metres high, with a door stone at the front, and the tomb runs north-east to south-west to face the midsummer sunrise. OPW points out that its shape changes completely as you walk around it, which makes the tomb a piece of sculpture as much as architecture. Reviewers find it far bigger than they expected and the setting quiet, with good views south; it is signposted from the road and reached by a short grassy path, but the lanes in are narrow with few passing places.
An unguided open-air national monument in OPW's care with no staff and no facilities. OPW warns that care and caution should be kept throughout a visit to its unguided sites.
About 80 m along a grassy path from the lane to the fenced tomb plot, with an interpretive plaque. A standing stone about 100 m south-west is in a private field. No toilets.
