About
Kirby Hall began in 1570 as an ambitious country house, and its elaborate stone frontage still suggests the wealth and courtly connections of the people who lived here. Some rooms survive under a roof while others stand open to the sky, allowing you to trace both the mansion's rise and its gradual decline. Displays in the state rooms introduce its residents, including James Chappell, whose rescue of Sir Christopher Hatton and his daughters forms part of the house's story. Outside, the recreated parterre evokes the formal garden of about 1690, and resident peacocks wander through the grounds. Visitors recommend the audio tour to make sense of the ruined rooms and suggest bringing a picnic, as refreshments are limited. Most ground-floor areas are accessible, although the loose gravel in the garden and car park can be difficult for wheelchairs. Dogs on leads are welcome in the outdoor ruins, gardens and grounds only.
