Rushton Triangular Lodge turns Sir Thomas Tresham's religious convictions into an unusually intricate piece of Elizabethan architecture. Built between 1593 and 1597, the lodge repeatedly uses the number three to represent the Holy Trinity, from its triangular plan to its three floors and groups of windows and gables. Tresham remained a committed Roman Catholic despite fines and imprisonment, and the inscriptions and decoration give visitors plenty of symbols to decipher. Reviewers find the interpretation panels especially helpful and recommend checking the limited opening dates before making a special journey. The compact building is worth studying from outside as well as within, but access involves steps and narrow spiral stairs. There is no dedicated car park, and the nearby lay-by has limited space, so allow for parking in Rushton village and walking to the lodge.
