Middleham Castle surrounds an immense Norman keep with the remains of the luxurious chambers built by the powerful Neville family. This Yorkshire stronghold became known as the Windsor of the North in the 15th century, and its surviving rooms still suggest a residence as well as a fortress. Explore the multi-storey toilet tower and horse-powered mill, then climb the keep for views across Wensleydale. An exhibition introduces notable figures from the castle's past and includes a replica of the Middleham Jewel, a sapphire-decorated medieval pendant found nearby. Dogs on leads are welcome, and picnic benches provide places to pause among the ruins. Reviewers particularly enjoy the viewing platform and the information boards explaining the different rooms. The spiral staircase is steep, and there are no toilets inside the site, so use the village facilities before entering. English Heritage currently reports Middleham Bridge closed and directs visitors to approach via the signed diversions.

EH members receive free standard admission with their membership card; National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary visits; special events may have separate arrangements.
Accessibility: Level access includes the ground-floor keep; the viewing platform requires a steep spiral staircase. Uneven grass, low walls and rabbit holes are present. No toilets on site; public toilets are about 70m away in the village.

EH currently reports Middleham Bridge on the A6108 closed to all traffic, cyclists and pedestrians following a lorry strike. Follow EH diversion guidance via Masham or Bedale; the local Ulshaw Bridge route is unsuitable for motorhomes, caravans and larger vehicles. No reopening date is confirmed.
