The park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year: the main gates at Parkgate Street and Castleknock Gate never close and the side gates open from about 07:00 to about 22:45, with pedestrian and cycle wickets at all hours. The Victorian kitchen walled garden by the visitor centre opens daily 10:00 to 16:00 (OPW's park page says 17:00). The playgrounds at the visitor centre and the People's Gardens open 09:30 until an hour before sunset; the People's Gardens playground was partly closed for maintenance on 19 October 2026. Chesterfield Avenue and several gates close for the Dublin Marathon on Sunday 25 October 2026. Allow three to four hours, or a day.
The deer rut runs from mid October to early November: stay well away from the bucks, never feed or approach the deer and keep at least 50 m from them. Victorian Tea Rooms on Chesterfield Avenue (from 09:30, closing 17:30 April to October and 16:30 in winter) and the Phoenix Park Café at the visitor centre; toilets at the visitor centre. No barbecues, camping or drones; 30 km/h speed limit; slopes are steep near the Wellington Monument.
Dogs: Pet dogs are welcome in most of the park under control at all times, on a lead in the People's Gardens, around the visitor centre, near the deer, near horse riders, on cycle lanes, near roads and water and at events, and not in the playgrounds, the Ashtown walled garden, cafes or toilets; restricted breeds muzzled on a short leash; no more than three dogs per person. Temporary signed restrictions when the deer are intolerant of intrusion at the rut (mid October to early November) and fawning (June and July) (OPW Code of Conduct and deer FAQ, 19 October 2026).
