OPW names no car park. The cemetery is on Blackhorse Avenue in Dublin 7, outside the Phoenix Park wall; OPW's park website says Dublin Bus route 37 stops along Blackhorse Avenue. Inside the park, on-street parking runs along North Road from Cabra Gate towards the zoo.
Driving pin: OPW's own pin at the cemetery gates on Blackhorse Avenue, the pedestrian entrance.
Grangegorman is the largest military cemetery in Ireland, a walled five-acre graveyard on Blackhorse Avenue a stone's throw from the Phoenix Park. It opened in 1876 as a resting place for service personnel of the British Empire and their families, serving the soldiers of Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, with zones for English, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian servicemen. Among the mature trees and well-maintained lawns lie war graves from both world wars, some of the British soldiers killed in the 1916 Rising, children from the Royal Hibernian Military School, casualties of the sinking of the RMS Leinster in 1918 and a Victoria Cross holder, Company Sergeant Major Martin Doyle of the Royal Munster Fusiliers. A screen-wall memorial of Irish limestone commemorates war casualties whose graves elsewhere in Ireland can no longer be maintained. The OPW maintains the cemetery with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; entry is free through the pedestrian gate, with free guided tours on Thursday afternoons from April to October, and dogs may come on a lead.
Free entry
Open all year, Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00 through the pedestrian gate; OPW prints no closed dates. Free guided tours of an hour run on Thursdays at 14:00 from April to October, meeting inside the gates, no booking needed, subject to change and weather; the last 2026 tours are on 22 and 29 October. Contact superintendent.park@opw.ie about the cemetery and phoenixparkvisitorcentre@opw.ie (01 677 0095) about tours.
Paved and gravel drives between lawns, uneven in places; appropriate footwear advised. No toilets or cafe. The former mortuary stands inside the gate and the Victoria Cross grave lies in the first section on the left behind it.
Dogs: Pet dogs are allowed on a lead throughout the cemetery.
