Prior's Hall Barn at Widdington preserves a large medieval agricultural building whose timber frame has been tree-ring dated to the middle of the fifteenth century. Its aisled interior and crown-post roof were made using some 400 oak trees, turning a practical farm building into a striking lesson in carpentry. Step inside to follow the uprights and braces through the long space, then use the interpretation panels to understand the barn's history and construction. Reviewers single out the roof structure and suggest allowing a short, unhurried stop to appreciate it. A small car park stands beside the barn, and visitors note that it has room for only a few vehicles. Check the seasonal weekend opening before setting out, as the building is not open every day. Only assistance dogs are admitted. There are no visitor facilities, although Widdington has a pub and Saffron Walden offers more options.
