Quarry Bank at Styal is a complete Industrial Revolution community: the cotton mill Samuel Greg built beside the River Bollin in 1784, the Greg family's house next door, the Apprentice House where up to 90 pauper children lodged while working ten-hour days, and the village of workers' cottages the family built in the early 1800s. The mill still runs its heritage spinning and weaving machinery, so the floors shake as the looms turn, and the giant waterwheel and steam engine are the highlights. Gardens climb the valley side past restored glasshouses, and 400 acres of woodland follow the river, with dogs welcome outdoors. Reviewers rate the enthusiastic guides, the cake in the Weaving Shed Restaurant, and the soft play at the top of the mill. Tips from visitors: the Apprentice House and Workers' Cottage are guided-tour only and cannot be pre-booked, so sign up at visitor reception on arrival; queues form even for members; and paths are steep, though a shuttle buggy links reception, mill yard, gardens and village.
