About

Tatton Park is a National Trust estate run and financed by Cheshire East Council, which is why it works differently from most Trust places: members enter the mansion and gardens free but pay the per-vehicle parkland charge, with the farm extra, while walkers on foot enter the park for nothing. The early 18th-century mansion was the Egerton family home, opulently furnished with Gillow pieces and a complete run of servants' quarters, and 50 acres of gardens hold historic glasshouses, a walled kitchen garden, an Italian garden, a fernery and a century-old Japanese Garden viewed from its perimeter. Beyond lie 1,000 acres of ancient deer park with meres and cycle trails, a rare-breeds farm worked 1930s-style, and the Tudor Old Hall, opened on special days. Reviewers love the free-roaming deer, the labelled trees and the sheer scale. Tips from visitors: parking by the farm is quieter than by the mansion, dogs are welcome across the parkland but not in the buildings, and keep at least 50 metres from the deer.
