Lyme sits on the edge of the Peak District, home to the Legh family for six centuries, from medieval hunting lodge to the Regency mansion whose reflecting lake doubled as Pemberley in the BBC's Pride and Prejudice. Inside, room guides bring to life Thomas Legh's early 19th-century household, visitors can dress in Regency costume, and the collection includes the Lyme Missal, the most important printed book in the Trust's care. Outside are the Rose Garden and Ravine Garden, then 1,400 acres of moorland and woodland with a herd of red deer and walks out to The Cage and the Lantern. Dogs are welcome on a short lead across the estate and gardens, and the Crow Wood playscape suits younger children. Reviewers praise the friendly volunteers and the behind-the-scenes servants' tour. Tips from visitors: arrive early to get a place on that tour, and note the house is a mile from the entrance, with a volunteer-run shuttle bus and a steep five-minute climb from the car park.

Admission The Park & Garden Ticket includes access to walks around Lyme's 1,400 acre estate, formal garden, cafés, shops, facilities and car park. The House, Park, & Garden Ticket includes the above, plus access to the historic house at Lyme. Tickets can be purchased at the Admissions Hut on arrival, and cannot be pre-booked in advance (unless you are a group of 15 or more). Carers/Companions The Essential Companion card makes it simple to bring one or two carers or companions with you, free of charge. Show the card when you arrive, and your carer(s) or companion(s) won't need to pay an entry fee. It's in your name so you can bring whoever you like, but even if you don't have an Essential Companion card, you can still bring carers or companions free – the card just makes it quicker and simpler for you. 1.2 miles, graded moderate, 30 to 60 minutes, a short steep climb to the Elizabethan hunting tower for views of the Manchester skyline, the Peak District and the deer sanctuary. Starts at the refreshment kiosk in the main car park, Lyme, Disley, Stockport, SK12 2NX; the estate entrance is on the A6 only and parking is 200 yards from the house.

0.89 miles, graded moderate, about 30 minutes, step free, from the station through Disley village to Lyme's entrance. Starts at Disley train station, Buxton Road West, Disley, SK12 2AE; the station is about 0.5 mile from the entrance and a further mile to the house and gardens, and the route is waymarked. Needs no car park payment, which makes it the alternative on days when Lyme's car park is full.
