Restormel Castle

Restormel Castle's circular stone keep crowns a steep mound above the River Fowey, with a deep ditch separating it from the surrounding countryside. Begun in the later 13th century, it became a grand residence associated with Edward the Black Prince, whose visits brought life to its great hall and neighbouring deer park. The surviving walls make the arrangement of the rooms easy to follow, while steps lead up to the battlements for views across the valley. The wall walk offers a different perspective on the rooms and surrounding countryside. Bring a picnic for the grounds, where benches offer places to pause beside the dry moat. Dogs are welcome on short leads. A walking trail links the castle with the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery, and the entrance path has steps, so contact the site about alternative access if needed.
