Sandham Memorial Chapel

Sandham Memorial Chapel houses one of the greatest sets of paintings created in Britain in the 20th century — a cycle of monumental murals by Stanley Spencer inspired by his experiences as a soldier in World War I. The paintings, which took Spencer six years to complete, cover every wall of the purpose-built chapel and culminate in a vast Resurrection scene on the altar wall. Built in the 1920s to commemorate Lieutenant Henry Willoughby Sandham, the chapel is often compared to Giotto's Arena Chapel in Padua.
