Tattershall College is the roofless brick shell of a grammar school for church choristers, built in 1460 for the college of priests that Ralph, Lord Cromwell, founded by charter in 1440. Cromwell, Henry VI's treasurer, also raised the great tower at the National Trust's Tattershall Castle nearby; he died in 1456, and William of Wainfleet, Bishop of Winchester, saw the school finished. After the Chantries Act of 1547 closed the college, the building carried on as a secular grammar school until the late 17th century, then became a malt-house and granary before passing into state guardianship in 1972. Built of red brick with limestone dressings, it is one of the oldest brick structures in England, and its Tudor arched doorways still mark the levels of the original two floors. Visitors note it is easy to walk past, tucked between houses off the Market Place, where you can park. Run by Heritage Lincolnshire for English Heritage, it welcomes dogs on leads.
