Treasurer's House

Treasurer's House in York stands in the shadow of York Minster on a site occupied since Roman times. Named after the medieval Treasurers of York Minster who lived here, the present house dates mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries but incorporates medieval fabric. It was lavishly restored by the industrialist Frank Green between 1897 and 1930 and filled with his outstanding collection of furniture, ceramics and paintings spanning three centuries. The house is also famous for the 1953 account of a plumber's apprentice who claimed to have seen a column of Roman soldiers marching through the cellar.
