Tregiffian is an entrance grave, a type of chambered tomb found in England only on the Isles of Scilly and the Penwith peninsula, dating from the later Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Part of its mound was levelled for the road in the 1840s, yet the stone-lined chamber survives largely intact, almost five metres long under four massive capstones, with its entrance between two portal slabs at the south-west end. One slab carries 25 carved hollows called cup marks, a rare form of prehistoric rock art that may be the oldest in the south west; the stone in place is a cast, with the original at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. The Cornwall Heritage Trust manages the site for English Heritage. Reviewers like how the tomb sits right beside the road and suggest pairing it with the Merry Maidens stone circle nearby. Park in the small Merry Maidens lay-by and take care on the grass verge. Dogs on leads are welcome.
