Trengwainton Garden

Trengwainton, the 'home of springs', is a 25-acre garden between the moors and the sea near Penzance where plants from across the globe first flowered in Britain. Rose Price, son of a Jamaican sugar planter, laid out ten walled gardens in 1815, five of them said to match the dimensions of Noah's Ark; the Bolitho family, owners from 1867, built up the plant collection, and Sir Edward Bolitho gave the garden to the National Trust in 1961. Winding wooded paths climb half a mile past ponds and streams to a terrace looking across Mount's Bay. Storm Goretti felled some 150 trees in January 2026; the garden reopened section by section and the terrace is open again as restoration continues. Reviewers single out the walled garden, the spring magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons, and the cafe's outdoor seating. Tips from visitors: the climb to the terrace is steep, and dogs on short leads are welcome throughout.
