Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant

Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant is a 16th-century farmhouse in the remote Wybrnant valley near Penmachno, the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan, whose 1588 translation of the whole Bible into Welsh is credited with ensuring the survival of the language. An original copy of the 1588 Bible can be seen in the farmhouse, and the refurbished llyfrgell, or library, holds hundreds of Bibles in various languages. Outside are a lawned garden with picnic benches, a stream and part of the old drovers' road. Dogs on a lead are welcome in the grounds and on the ground floor of the farmhouse. The Trust's one-mile Cwm Wybrnant walk loops from the car park, and a five-mile upland circuit starts on the B4406. Reviewers praise the peace of the valley and the knowledgeable guides. Tips from visitors: take care on the narrow single-track lane, check that the house is open before setting out, and bring a picnic for the benches in the garden. Sat nav does not work with the property's postcode; the Trust says to follow the brown signs from Penmachno.
