Anglesey Abbey

Anglesey Abbey began as an Augustinian priory in the 12th century, and parts survive within the Jacobean-style house that Huttleston Broughton, the future Lord Fairhaven, bought in 1926 and filled with paintings, silver, rare clocks and furniture. He turned 114 flat fenland acres into a garden with over 100 statues, rose and dahlia gardens and the winter garden, a scented walk ending in a grove of white-stemmed birches, famous for snowdrops. Lode Mill, the 18th century watermill he rescued, still grinds flour on certain days, and children get a woodland play area. Only assistance dogs are allowed in the grounds, though a dog walk starts from the car park. Reviewers praise the immaculate gardens and the lived-in feel of the house.
