Historic Scotland names no parking: the ditch is in Falkirk, signposted from the A9 and reached from the B816, Tamfourhill Road. A small parking area beside the ditch and roadside parking further along Tamfourhill Road are used by visitors, but no official source names them, so the status is recorded as unknown.
Driving pin: the parking area on Tamfourhill Road about 50 m west of Historic Scotland's own pin. There is no entry to the house called Watling Lodge or its grounds; the ditch is seen on both sides of it. Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
Beside Tamfourhill Road on the western edge of Falkirk, two lengths of the Antonine Wall's ditch run either side of a house called Watling Lodge. This is perhaps the best preserved stretch of the ditch anywhere, surviving almost to its original size, so it is easy to picture the frontier as the Romans built it from AD 140. The rampart changes here too, built of stacked turf to the west of the lodge and mainly of earth and clay to the east. The main Roman road north to Camelon crossed the Wall at this point, and a fortlet of about 30 soldiers, probably sent from Rough Castle, guarded the crossing where the lodge garden is now, though nothing of it is visible and the house and its grounds are private. Aerial photographs have revealed a Roman temporary camp in the field towards the Union Canal. The slopes of the ditch are steep, uneven and sometimes boggy. There is a small roadside parking area, information signs and a Roman-themed playground nearby.
Historic Scotland: 'Watling Lodge East and West is free to visit and open all year round.' 'Please note there is no entry to the house or its grounds.' No hours, closures or notices on 21 October 2026. The Antonine Wall is part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.
The area is wooded, with some steep uneven paths on the north side, and the bottom of the ditch can be boggy. Information signs stand by the ditch; a Roman-themed playground is nearby. No toilets.
