House & GardenDevon4.6
Arlington Court on the edge of Exmoor is a complete family estate held by the Chichesters for more than 500 years, its Regency house built in 1823 and extended in 1860 behind an austere facade. Rosalie Chichester, the last of the line, filled it with model ships and shells and wanted the estate kept as a refuge for wildlife. The stables hold the National Trust Carriage Museum, more than 40 vehicles from state coaches to humble carts, with a couple to climb into and hobby horses for children. Beyond the Victorian garden lie 2,600 acres, over 20 miles of paths, the Old Lake walk to the heronry and bird hide, and a play area with sit-on diggers and a mud kitchen; dogs are welcome everywhere except the house and tea-room. Reviewers praise the knowledgeable staff and the pasties. Tips from regulars: the wider estate and its walks can be enjoyed without paying admission, and allow a full day if you want the house, museum and a lake walk.
