Baconsthorpe Castle

Baconsthorpe Castle records the ambitions of the Heydon family in a moated manor house enlarged and altered over roughly two centuries. Its strong inner gatehouse belongs to the unsettled period of the Wars of the Roses, while later generations adapted part of the property for textile production and added an Elizabethan outer gateway. The ruins have reopened following extensive conservation, with information boards explaining how the family built, transformed and eventually abandoned the site. Reviewers enjoy the peaceful setting and suggest allowing time to read those panels rather than simply circling the walls. The signed Heydon Walk continues to St Mary's Church, where family memorials and stained glass add to the story. Expect gravel, grass and a narrow entrance to the inner castle, and keep clear of the deep moat and mere. Dogs on leads are welcome.
