Sheringham Park is the landscape Humphry Repton regarded as his personal favourite, laid out to his 1812 design with a main drive that reveals the sea, rolling parkland and a temple; the Trust calls it the most complete example of his work. The Wild Garden holds a nationally important collection of rhododendrons and azaleas among Scots pines, some Cornish Reds dating from the 1830s, with viewing towers to look down on the colour when it peaks in late May and early June. Nearly 1,000 acres of woodland and parkland run past two restored Second World War pillboxes to cliffs where skylarks nest. Children get den building in the dog-free Bower Garden, and dogs go off lead on marked routes outside the March to July ground-nesting season. Reviewers value the clear waymarking, clean loos, the Courtyard Cafe and the second-hand bookshop. Tips from regulars: bring coins for the pay and display, expect cattle and a few climbs on the longer routes, and the treetop Gazebo is closed for now.
