Blackbury Camp

Blackbury Camp is an Iron Age hillfort built in the fourth century BC and occupied for several hundred years. Its defensive banks enclose a woodland clearing, while the entrance was protected by an unusual triangular outer earthwork. Trees now surround the site, making the shapes of the ramparts part of a quiet woodland visit rather than a conventional building tour. Reviewers particularly enjoy the bluebells in spring and the chance to see the earthworks at close quarters, with room to pause over a picnic. Bring food and drink, since there are no toilets, shops or refreshments at the camp. The final approach is along narrow country lanes and the small car park has limited capacity. Ground conditions vary with the weather, and the ditch can hold water after heavy rain. Dogs on leads are welcome across the site.
