Brownsea Island sits in Poole Harbour, a nature reserve of heathland, woodland and an internationally important bird lagoon, and the birthplace of Scouting, where Baden-Powell held his experimental camp in 1907. Its most famous residents are the red squirrels, one of the largest colonies in southern England, though visitors also spot spoonbills on the lagoon and seals from the shore. Volunteers with telescopes often staff the bird hides, a squirrel-themed agility course keeps children busy, and free introductory walks and the Squirrel Shuttle mini-bus run when volunteers allow. The Villano Cafe serves pasties and sandwiches, and there is a beach on the south shore. Reviewers allow three to four hours and recommend sturdy footwear on the uneven paths. Tips from regulars: everyone, members included, pays the ferry fare from Poole Quay, the crossing takes about 20 minutes, the last boat back leaves late afternoon so plan your loop, and an early ferry gives the best chance of squirrels.

Under 5s Admission and ferry fare is free of charge for under 5s. Carers/ Companions The Essential Companion card makes it simple to bring one or two carers or companions with you, free of charge. Show the card when you arrive, and your carer(s) or companion(s) won't need to pay an entrance fee. Please note that the boat fee will still apply and must be paid directly to the ferry operator upon arrival at Poole Quay. The Essential Companion card is in your name so you can bring whoever you like, but even if you don't have a card, you can still bring carers or companions free - the card just makes it quicker and simpler for you.
