About
Camber Castle is an unusually little-altered artillery fort built by Henry VIII to guard the port of Rye. Its rounded defensive works now stand inland among fields, a visible reminder of how much this coastline has changed. The current visit is to the exterior, with the interior closed for conservation. Reaching the castle is part of the experience: public footpaths from Brede Lock cross the grazing marshes, with the official approach taking about a mile from Rye. Reviewers enjoy the quiet setting and the walk around the outside, but warn that driving directly towards the castle can lead to private roads and dead ends. Leave your car at public parking in Rye and use the signed pedestrian route. Wear footwear suited to mud and check current reserve notices before setting out. The official approach recommends Winchelsea Road parking, postcode TN31 7EL, roughly a mile from the castle. Riverside Parking is the driving arrival point; pay its current tariff and walk via Brede Lock.
