Camber Castle is an unusually little-altered artillery fort built by Henry VIII to guard the port of Rye. Its rounded defensive works now stand inland among fields, a visible reminder of how much this coastline has changed. The current visit is to the exterior, with the interior closed for conservation. Reaching the castle is part of the experience: public footpaths from Brede Lock cross the grazing marshes, with the official approach taking about a mile from Rye. Reviewers enjoy the quiet setting and the walk around the outside, but warn that driving directly towards the castle can lead to private roads and dead ends.
